See how new ways to build could change everything
Almost 40 percent of all the energy used in the United States is used by buildings or by activities in those buildings. (Heat, lights, computers and the like.) Finding a more efficient way to build and operate buildings will be a major part of our effort to create an economy that uses resources with greater effect. Heat and air conditioning, hot water and lights account for 63 percent of the energy used, so focusing on those areas can have a major impact.
The Wild Center's experience with building, has pointed us in one direction. Every decision we make about nergy use ends up saving energy, and in that process money. We are off oil, our lighting is incredibly efficient, and we often heat our hot water and building with sunlight.
In this Thrive Together section we hope to explore and showcase best practices in building new ways, with less and less cost and impact. As you can see if you visit The Wild Center, or see our Net Zero home videos, the only thing you give up in this process is higher bills and carbon pollution.
